We've been buying these at the grocery store, and they make a very nice fire. They're not quite as hot as regular firewood, but they burn much longer, produce fewer emissions, and leave a lot less ash in the fireplace. They crackle, but don't splutter and pop like raw logs. (A nice feature for safety paranoids like me.) We generally get the 3-packs in the store for anywhere from $7.49 to $9.99 - but they often have an instant coupon attached for $3 off. The literature that comes as part of the package also contains a "$5 off 2 packs" coupon that doesn't expire, so we also save those for when we buy them without the instant coupon. They're not terribly cheap, but I think it's a nice evening's fire for 5 - 7 bucks. We'll start the fire at the beginning of a hockey game, and manage to get through that and a movie before the fire dies out. Short of using real wood, this is your best option for a nice evening's fire. They light easily, and produce a hearty flame that lasts for the first hour or so. The flames do die down a bit after that, but after two hours you can add a third log (always start with two!), and the flames come back. The box says that 3 Stax logs will burn 3 - 3.5 hours. One reason I bought these was the idea that I could have a fairly short duration fire. My experience with them follows. Cons: They can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes to actually get going well, the paper does not seem to light the logs well. Once they do get going they are very nice for about an hour or so then you must add another log or they slowly burn down to very minimal flames and begin to put off a greater amount of smoke. If you add a third log it again takes about 20 minutes or more to get going well and then only lasts less than an hour before dying to minimal flames again. Three logs do not stop burning after 3 - 3.5 hours as advertised, they smolder on with tiny flickers of flame for much longer. For example, a fire started last night at 9pm using only two logs,...
